Part Description: The defrost thermostat monitors the temperature of the evaporator coils and controls when the defrost heater runs during the defrost cycle.

Failure Symptoms: Excessive buildup of frost/ice on evaporator coils; Refrigerator is unable to maintain a constant temperature; Poor cooling performance in both fridge and freezer sections.

Testing: Unplug the unit and disconnect the defrost thermostat. Place the disconnected thermostat inside a working freezer. Once the thermostat has hit it's closing temperature, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the defrost heater does not have continuity, replace it.

Bonus Tip: Determine the closing temperature of your defrost thermostat by finding the temperature range on the side of the thermostat. You're looking for a set of letters and numbers that look something like L64-41F. Using this example, 64 degrees Fahrenheit is the opening temperature and 41 degrees Fahrenheit is the differential. To find the closing temperature you subtract the differential from the opening temperature. Therefore in this example 64-41= 23 degrees Fahrenheit closing temperature.
